Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Wrigley gets cookies too! This is my 6-year old dog Wrigley, seconds before devouring his early christmas present! You can see the intensity of his concentration in his eyes :) I know a lot of my blog-viewers have dogs, so I thought I'd include this in my cookie list this year. Merry Christmas everyone!

RECIPE: Peanut Butter Dog Treats
makes about 36 dog treats

INGREDIENTS:
1/4 cup honey
1/2 cup peanut butter (natural is best: no salt, sugar, or oil added)
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 cup natural apple juice
1 tablespoon oil
1.5 cups rolled oats
1 cup whole wheat flour
3/4 to 1 cup all purpose flour

DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 300F. In a large saucepan, whisk together honey, peanut butter, applesauce, apple juice, and oil. Cook over medium heat until mixture begins to simmer and thicken. Remove from heat. Stir in rolled oats. Allow mixture to cool slightly (15 minutes). Stir in whole wheat flour. Sitr in enough all purpose flour to form a stiff dough. Divide dough in half.

On a lightly floured surface, roll one portion of the dough at a time to 1/4 inch thick. Cut out dough using a 2-inch cookie cutter. Place cutouts on an ungreased cookie sheet. Repeat with remaining dough.

Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Turn treats over and bake for 15-20 minutes more or until both sides are light golden brown. When done baking all batches, turn off the oven and place all the treats on one large cookie sheet. Place the cookies in the oven for 1 hour as the oven cools.

Store in an airtight container for about 1 month.
